Here's the plain-English version we'd give you in the chair. It applies whether you're after an all-day matte crop or lived-in texture through longer hair — these aren't "men's" or "women's" products, they're just tools for a look.

Pomade: shine and slick
Pomade is the old-school one — a shiny, polished finish and a strong, re-combable hold, the stuff of slick-backs and pompadours. The trade-offs: that shine isn't for everyone, oil-based pomades can be a pain to wash out, and on fine hair the weight drags everything flat. If you love the hold but not the shine, you actually want a clay.
Paste: the easy, everyday option
Paste is the all-rounder — a light-to-medium hold with a low, natural finish. Soft, pliable and forgiving, it's a great first styling product. It won't lock a dramatic shape, but for tousled, casual texture it's ideal. Clay is the natural step up when paste isn't quite holding.
Clay: matte hold, no grease
Clay is where most people land. Made with mineral clay (we use kaolin), it thickens the hair, grips without stiffness, and dries to a matte or low-shine, natural finish — the hold of a pomade without the wet-look sheen, and re-workable through the day.

Styling powder is the secret weapon for fine or flat hair. Tap a tiny bit at the roots, work it in, and it grips each strand for instant lift and matte texture — no water, no shine. The classic mistake is too much; a couple of taps is plenty. Our The Powder is lightweight, unscented and residue-free — many use it under a clay for lasting volume.

How to choose, by what you want
- All-day matte, no shine → Clay (or Liquid Clay for smoother).
- Shiny, slicked, classic → Pomade.

Barber tips for applying any of them
- Less than you think. Start pea-sized — you can add, never subtract.
- Warm it first between your palms until even and clear.
- Dry or towel-dried, not soaking (salt spray is the damp-hair exception).
- Roots first for volume, mid-lengths for texture.
- Style, don't drown — heavy or greasy means too much product.

Is hair clay bad for your hair?
No — a good clay is mineral clay and conditioning ingredients. Ours are made without harsh chemicals and are 100% vegan. Just wash it out at the end of the day.
What's the difference between clay and paste?
Clay gives more grip and a more definite matte finish; paste is softer and more casual. If paste isn't holding, clay is the step up.
Can women use hair clay and powder?
Absolutely — these aren't men's products. Plenty of our customers are women using powder for volume or clay for texture.
How do I get matte instead of shiny hair?
