"Vegan" used to be an afterthought on a styling tin. Now it's one of the first things people check — rightly. But not all vegan clays are equal, and the label alone won't tell you whether it actually holds.
Here's how to choose one that performs as well as it reads — from a barber's point of view, after 20+ years behind the chair and five years formulating and proving our own.
What "vegan hair clay" actually means
No animal-derived ingredients, not tested on animals. In practice that rules out beeswax, lanolin and some by-products, and swaps in plant-based alternatives: mineral clay for grip, plant waxes like candelilla for pliability, plant oils to condition. The catch — "vegan" doesn't automatically mean clean or ethical. It's a starting point, not the finish line.
What makes a genuinely good one

- Mineral clay you can see on the label — the hold comes from kaolin. If clay isn't near the top, it's a wax pretending to be a clay.
- Clean, recognisable ingredients — plant oils and waxes, few unpronounceable extras. Full INCI on every product page.
- It washes out — no residue or build-up with a normal wash.
- Real ethics — cruelty-free, handmade in small batches, honest about where it's made.
- Made for your hair, not a demographic — good clay isn't gendered.
What to avoid
"Wax" dressed up as "clay"; overpowering synthetic fragrance; sky-high shine if you want natural; and vague sourcing — if a brand won't say where or how it's made, that tells you something.
How to choose for your hair
- Fine or flat: a lighter clay, ideally with powder underneath for lift.
- Thick or coarse: you can take a firmer clay with more grip.
- Short, defined styles: a standard matte clay for separation.
- Want it smoother? A liquid clay for even, brushed-through texture.
